Clinical Supervision Burnaby

Starting clinical supervision is similar to driving. You are in the driving seat, and as your clinical supervisor, I am sitting next to you in the passenger seat. You set a goal similar to a destination, and this determines the direction we drive in. You can slow down, change direction, or change lanes anytime in sessions. You may feel stuck in some sessions, and in these moments, as your clinical supervisor, I will offer suggestions on how to move forward. Some sessions may involve driving in difficult terrain as you share your clients’ upsetting and painful experiences. We process and reflect on these experiences together as we continue our journey. You gain new insight and tools while sharing your therapeutic work and covering new ground. As you drive home after your clinical supervision session and reflect on your journey, you reflect on how you feel and your clinical work.

Approach to supervision

My approach to supervision includes the following:

As your clinical supervisor, I ensure you adhere to professional standards as a registered clinical counsellor. I am also responsible for ensuring your accountability in the counselling field and the community. For example, I ensure you can support your clients without feeling burnt out. If you feel burnt out or stressed, we discuss this and find the best way to support you and your client’s well-being.

As your clinical supervisor, I ensure you apply the counselling knowledge you gained as a student. For example, building strong alliances with clients, being attuned, identifying blind spots and areas of growth.

  • As your clinical supervisor, I focus on self-awareness and reflection. I also address transference and countertransference issues. Harry Aponte’s work on “Person-of-the-therapist” (POTT) helps you recognize your personal struggles. It also shows how these struggles may manifest in a counseling session.
  • As your clinical supervisor, we work together to determine which supervision theory and model work best for you.
  • Finally, as your clinical supervisor, my role includes ethical accountability and supporting you to achieve this. This may include ensuring you have the necessary paperwork, such as informed consent forms.
