Movember in Canada: A Celebration of Men’s Health

Movember is a yearly phenomenon that is observed during the month of November where men all over the world are encouraged to grow moustaches in an effort to raise awareness and funds to counter men health related problems especially cancer of the prostate, testicles, mental health and even suicide prevention. The campaign was initiated in Australia in 2003 but it has become an international hit with Canada one of the biggest contributors to the campaign.

This article will discuss the way Movember is observed in Canada, the differences it has made in the health of men, and how Canadians can join the movement to enhance health and wellbeing of men in the country.

What is Movember?

Movember is a blend of moustache and November and is an event that is observed annually and challenges men to grow a moustache throughout the month of November. It is aimed at initiating a discussion about the male health problems, creating awareness, and motivating individuals to act. The participants, also referred to as “Mo Bros” are requested to raise funds to aid men health programs as they grow their new facial hair.

Even though the foundation underpinning it is the growing of a moustache, Movember has become a bigger movement meant to address problems that disproportionately impact men.

These issues include:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Mental health issues
  • Suicide prevention.

Why is Movember Important?

The health of men is not discussed or even addressed. Men in Canada live less lives than women and a large percentage of men are hesitant to seek medical assistance in matters pertaining to their health. Movember states that one out of nine men will be diagnosed to have prostate cancer at some point in their lives and suicide is the top cause of death among Canadian men under the age of 45.

Movember aims at resolving such figures by establishing a platform where the issue of mental health, cancer, and other health problems in men can be discussed openly. The end outcome is to lower the number of avoidable deaths in men and their general quality of life.

Movember’s Impact in Canada

Movember in Canada is one of the most active communities across the globe. Thousands of Canadian men and women are enjoying Movember each year by growing moustaches, running or cycling to raise money and organizing awareness events. The money collected in Movember is utilized in supporting men health programs, research, and projects in Canada and other parts of the world.

Funds Raised for Men’s Health

Since Movember started in Canada, the movement has collected millions of dollars to help in promoting the health of men.

These funds have been directed towards various health projects, including:

  • Prostate cancer research
  • Testicular cancer research
  • Mental health services
  • Suicide prevention interventions
  • Education and community outreach programs.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness

Mental health has also been in the centre of concern of the mission of Movember. Research indicates that men would be less inclined to obtain assistance in overcoming mental health issues because of the social norms and stereotypes concerning masculinity. This may cause increased depressions, anxiety and even suicide. Movember helps Canadians to open up more to mental health by discussing it and getting assistance when necessary.

How to Get Involved in Movember in Canada

There are several ways Canadians can participate in Movember, whether by growing a moustache, making a donation, or spreading awareness. The movement has become a nationwide effort, with support from individuals, schools, businesses, and even professional sports teams.

Grow a Moustache (Mo Bro)

The most popular form of participating is to grow a moustache during the month of November. In such a way, participants (known as Mo Bros) will be able to initiate a discussion on the topic of men health and collect money via sponsorship.

Move for Movember (Mo Sista)

In case you cannot grow a moustache, you may still join in by getting involved in the “Move for Movember” challenge. It is a fantastic opportunity to have some form of physical activity and do a good cause at the same time.

Donate or Fundraise

In case you do not want to grow a moustache or engage in physical activities, one of the best ways to be a part of Movember is to make donations. You may make a donation to Movember Foundation or sponsor an individual or a team. \

Spread Awareness

The Movember movement is all about starting conversations. Canadians can contribute by sharing information about Movember on social media, discussing men’s health with friends and family, or even hosting local events to raise awareness. Talking openly about the issues men face can help reduce stigma and increase understanding of these important health topics.
